Music and Babies

Providing music for unborn babies has been found to stimulate their auditory systems and to have a positive effect on their response to music and other sounds after birth. Many musician parents say their unborn babies become more animated when they play their instruments.

Familiar sounds, particulary those that both mom and baby can learn to associate with rest and relaxation, can be played after the baby's arrival to help soothe and calm the newborn child. Mother are encouraged to select tunes from among their own musical favorites. Newborn babies also seem to enjoy music box tunes, and children's songs, especially when they are performed in the mother's native language.
