How to Restring Electric Guitars

Here’s how to restring electric guitar quickly and easily and keep your strings in tune.

Electric guitars are strung in a similar manner as acoustic guitars, but you thread the ball end through a metal bridge piece. Some guitars, such as the Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster, allow the strings to pass through the bridge saddle all the way through the body

Other guitars, such as the Les Paul, have tailpieces on the top of the guitar where the string starts. Others have a moveable bridge where the pitch of the strings can be lowered by depressing a moveable arm, known as a tremolo bar.

How to Restring Nylon-String Guitars

Here’s how to restring nylon string guitar quickly and easily and keep your strings in tune.
  • Ball End Strings. Some nylon-string guitars use strings that have ball ends similar to steel strings. In those cases, simply place the string through the bridge, then wind the other end of the string through the tuners
  • Special Ties. Classical or flamenco nylon-string guitars require a special tie to fasten the string. Once the string is placed through the end, it should be brought back up and wrapped around the top of the string. Then the remaining string length is wrapped around the original length toward the bottom of the bridge
